Healing Through Food: Flax Seeds

From a healthy addition to muffins to a nutty ingredient for a smoothie, flaxseeds are a versatile ingredient that adds flavor and has excellent health benefits.

Flaxseeds are one of the oldest crops and have been cultivated since the beginning of civilization. Its Latin name, Linum usitatissimum, means “very useful”. Originally introduced by colonists as a fiber for clothing, flaxseed has become a versatile plant. Every part of the plant is used commercially, either directly or after processing.

Its rich nutrient profile is filled with protein, fiber, and omega-3s with plenty of health benefits. It promotes gut health and bowel regularity. The high fiber slows down digestion, improving digestive health and relieving constipation. It can also help lower blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein, promoting heart health.

It is easy to include flaxseeds in one’s diet. Since flaxseed is available as an oil, it is an excellent replacement for artificial salad dressings. You can add flaxseeds to your morning yogurt, cereal, or oatmeal for extra protein and fiber to start your day. For bakers looking to make their treats healthier, mixing water with flaxseeds can be a great replacement for eggs. It can easily be mixed into bread, muffins, or other baked goods if you just want an extra kick. Try adding a teaspoon of ground flaxseed to mayonnaise or mustard when making a sandwich.
