Overcoming the Barriers to Female Entrepreneurship in Guatemala
Guatemalan women face profound obstacles on their journey toward entrepreneurship. Many struggle with inadequate compensation, lack of recognition, unfair competition, and a deficiency of supportive networks are just some of the barriers needed to overcome. These challenges are exacerbated by the lasting impacts of gender discrimination and historical systemic violence, which have taken a toll on their self-esteem and hindered their capacity to foster solidarity that promotes collective change.
However, in our Women's Circles, participants have found a safe haven, a space where they receive psychological support also comprehensive support in legal, commercial, and social opportunities. This holistic approach encourages self-determination, empowering them to take control of their lives and businesses, thereby regaining their personal and professional agency.
La Marchante en Línea, a key initiative to support female entrepreneurs, has collaborated closely with 25 women, guiding them through the critical process of businesses formalization. Thanks to their registration with the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT), these entrepreneurs have unlocked new markets and institutional opportunities, experiencing firsthand the tangible benefits of registering their operations. For a year, the finance team has managed the accounting for these businesses, providing them with a valuable learning experience. Today, they stand ready to independently manage their own accounting, stepping forward with greater confidence and mastery over their financial matters.
However, barriers that limit their projects success persist, such as:
Restricted access to financing: The lack of credit history and collateral prevents many women from accessing growth capital. There is a pressing need for solidarity investments.
Lack of business training: Ongoing obstacles include insufficient training in key areas such as management, marketing,, and finance.
Gender discrimination: persisten stereotypes confine women to domestic roles, limiting their expansion opportunities.
Poor infrastructure: Limited access to modern markets and technologies slows down business growth, particularly in rural areas
Impact of climate change: Female entrepreneurs reliant on agriculture face heightened vulnerability to droughts and natural disasters.
Violence and insecurity: Various regions contend with threats like extortion and violence, posing continual risks to their ventures.
Our mission persists in creating enhanced opportunities and fostering an ecosystem where Guatemalan women entrepreneurs can thrive. The journey to a more inclusive and prosperous future is underway, and our dedication to leveling the playing field remains steadfast.
