Healing Through Food at HSP: A Reflection
This semester at Highland Support Project, we started a new social media campaign called ‘Healing Through Food.’ The Healing through Food campaign aims to leverage the nutritional and cultural richness of native Mesoamerican ingredients by showcasing one such ingredient weekly. It introduces affordable, healthy, and easy-to-prepare recipe videos centered around these ingredients. Additionally, the program highlights small business owners in Guatemala who sell these products online, connecting them with a U.S.-based audience.
Each week, we’d pick a delicious Guatemalan recipe, film it—and sometimes live stream it—and post it on our Instagram. This was my first semester working here at Highland Support and I had a blast!
We did lots of recipes this semester, although my personal favorites were the Guatemalan chicken tacos and the green bean ejotes. Cooking them with my coworkers—and by cooking, I mean filming it all since I can’t be trusted with appliances—made up many of my favorite memories this semester. And of course, eating them with my coworkers, many of whom are good friends of mine, is a memory I’ll cherish.
Speaking more on the work-related side of things, I had tons of fun with that too. Whilst someone was living streaming, and others cooked, I’d dart all across the kitchen, trying to get as many shots of the process as possible.
Now, this semester is concluding. I hope you all get to try out some of these recipes over the summer—cause I know I sure am! Stay tuned for more healthy recipes from your friends at Highland Support Project.
