Mayan Mathematics Lessons: Working to Introduce Virginia Schools to a New Math System
Mayan mathematics uses a numeral system that is very different from the system most of the world uses today. Unlike how we tend to memorize times tables and other mathematic properties, Mayan mathematics is based on logic, and emphasizes the importance of thinking rather than memorizing. With standardized testing and traditional curriculums forcing schools to "teach to the test”, memorization of material rather than having students actually learn is becoming more common every day. In an effort to educate middle and high school students about Mayan mathematics and the Indigenous culture that surrounds it as well as tackling the task of teaching how to think logically and solve problems without memorizing content, I have created 10 lessons about the Mayan numeral system. Below you will find a newsletter explaining what Mayan mathematics is as well as how the lessons are designed for teachers to easily use them in their classroom in whatever format they see most beneficial.
